For major incidents, or those where there is a serious pollution risk, call the Environment Agency on 0800 807060.
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste and is a crime. It can cause serious pollution of the environment, can be a serious risk to human health, can harm wildlife and farm animals, spoils the local neighbourhoods and our quality of life. It costs an estimated one hundred million pounds a year to clear up and is a major problem for land-owners and farmers. Fly-tipping also undermines legitimate waste management companies who are undercut by illegal operators.

Fly-tipping is an offence that could result in offenders facing fines of up to £50,000 in Magistrates Court, unlimited fines in higher courts, or even prison sentences of up to five years. Tandridge District Council is committed to reducing the impact of fly-tipping and will work actively with land owners to identify offenders, prosecuting where appropriate.
We will deal promptly with fly-tipped material left on council land or highways, and will give advice to land owners affected by fly-tipping. Any incident of fly-tipping should be reported promptly.
Tandridge District Council offers a reward of up to £500 for information which leads to a successful prosecution in cases of fly-tipping. In most cases witnesses must be willing to provide a statement that will be used in the court process.

Do not pass waste to anyone without checking that they are authorised to take it. The waste may well end up dumped in a Tandridge lane and you will have committed an offence. Anyone who removes waste from your property, including builders, must be authorised to do so. In most cases this means that they will have to be a registered waste carrier.
The Environment Agency has a public register of waste carriers
(This link will open in a new window) so you can see if an individual or firm holds a waste carriers registration certificate. Our waste enforcement officer will also be happy to give advice.
