Introduction
We often hear of people whose belongings have been stolen or damaged by a fire, a flood, a burst pipe, an overflowing bath or a leaking washing machine. Many council tenants believe that renting from Tandridge means that we automatically insure their furniture, belongings and decorations against theft and damage. This is not the case and unfortunately many people only realise this after the damage has been done.
Tandridge Housing Services therefore strongly advises all tenants to take out household contents insurance. You can do this either through the Council scheme, or by making your own private arrangements.
Through its Tenants' Insurance Scheme the Council makes it easy for you to insure your belongings. No more having to deal with insurers who charge according to your postcode - this scheme charges the same rates wherever you live in the District.
This insurance scheme has the benefit of low cost premiums that are exclusive to Council tenants, which can be paid weekly along with your rent. The policy is arranged with a major insurance company, the
Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company, and is available only to Council tenants.
What the policy covers
Most of your household goods and contents are insured when in your home. Your contents and decorations are covered for loss or damage by fire, theft, water damage, vandalism, storm, flood or subsidence.
The policy also covers accidental damage to mirrors and fixed glass in furniture, televisions and other electrical goods, including aerials.
Also insured are:

This is only a summary of the policy. We will be pleased to provide you with a specimen policy document, which gives full details.
