Most Council tenants have the right to exchange with tenants of other Councils, Housing Associations or private landlords. This is known as a 'Mutual Exchange'. If you wish to move to another property or area it can often be quicker to arrange an exchange than to wait for a transfer.
If you wish to move within the Tandridge District, you can register on the Council's Mutual Exchange Register, which is kept in the Housing Needs Section at the Council Offices and is available for tenants to view during the Council's normal office hours. You will need to complete a registration card, available from the Housing Enquiries Desk or by contacting the Housing Needs Section on 01883 732825 or 732826. Once completed, the card will be displayed in the Council Offices for six months. In addition, you may advertise in local newspapers or on advertising boards in shops in the area of your choice.

There are also online communities for Council and Housing Association Tenants who are looking to exchange their homes. These are message board style sites where people can post property details and others can reply with offers of exchange. They also include advice and news boards. See below for links to websites.

We are currently working on joining the Homeswapper Scheme so that you will be able to register and view the list of properties included on the Register from your computer at home or on special terminals in the Council's reception area. More information will be added to this page when it becomes available so please check back periodically. At the moment you can register with the Homeswapper Scheme but you will have to pay a small admin charge which is currently £6.95 for three months membership. Once we have joined the scheme, and if the Council is your landlord, your membership will be free.
