Councillors & committees

Tandridge District Council has 42 councillors (This link will open in a new window) elected to look after the interests of the district as a whole and their local community. Currently, 33 Conservative, 8 Liberal Democrat and 1 independent councillors represent 20 wards. Each ward has one or more councillors.

District elections (This link will open in a new window) are usually held every three years out of four, at which a third of councillors are elected. In the fourth year the County Council elections are held. Councillors are not paid for the work they do, but they can claim an allowance. Details of their expenses are published each year - councillors allowances.

Committees
Councillors are appointed to a number of committees and sub-committees. They also represent the Council on many local organisations.

Eight main committees (This link will open in a new window) carry out the detailed business of the Council and make recommendations or reports to Council meetings. These are:

  • Community Services - leisure, refuse collection, recycling, public toilets, litter and street cleaning.
  • Planning - planning, applications, development.
  • Housing - council housing.
  • Licensing
  • Overview & Scrutiny - corporate strategy, performance indicators, Best Value, audit reports.
  • Planning Policy - Local Plan, Land charges, building control, environmental health.
  • Resources - finance, community safety, Council Tax, benefits, business rates, information technology.
  • Standards - councillors' code of conduct.

All meetings are held at the Council Offices, Oxted from 7.30pm. Copies of agendas are also available from the Council Offices or local libraries, or online by clicking on the following link agendas & minutes (This link will open in a new window).

During the Annual Meeting of the Council in May, the Chairman of the Council and Vice Chairman (This link will open in a new window) are appointed for the year.

The Chairman represents the Council at local community events and outside functions. The Council also has a Leader, (This link will open in a new window) a councillor from the majority party or administration, who acts as principal spokesperson on Council issues and policies and works closely with the Chief Executive.

Members of the public are welcome to attend committee and council meetings. They can also speak in support (This link will open in a new window) of or against planning applications, or submit questions and petitions to other council meetings.

A copy of the Council's constitution is available by clicking on the following link. Council constitution (This link will open in a new window)

All of Tandridge is covered by Parish Councils (This link will open in a new window) responsible for a variety of parish matters.
