Your right to vote

Who is entitled to vote?
Everyone listed in the electoral register, with a few exceptions, is entitled to vote at elections. These include General, European, County, District and Parish elections.

When are elections held?
The District elections are held every three years out of four, which means that each year 14 out of the 42 councillors currently serving on the Council are up for re-election. If they are elected they serve a four year term in office. In the fourth year the County Council elections are held.

When is the next election?

Next year the County Council elections will be held as well as the European Parliamentary elections.

What do councillors do?
When you vote in local elections you elect a councillor for your ward. They look after the interests of their local community, but also of the District as a whole. Councillors decide the priorities and objectives which the Council will pursue, as well as the amount the Council spends. They are not employed by the Council, but they do receive an allowance for the duties they carry out.

How do I get my name on the register?
You can get a copy of the Voter registration form. Once you have done this, please print it off, sign it and return it to us. Please read the notes before you fill in the form. As the annual canvass is currently taking place, we have removed the Voter Registration form.

Why should I vote? Will it make a difference?
Yes, is the answer. Voting is your chance to elect the person you believe will best represent your interests. It is important you vote, not only in General and European Elections, but in local ones as well. That's where your vote will have the most direct impact on your life.

What if I'm away or can't get to the polling station?
